Experimental Green Roof Installation on campus was first considered as a way to test the practical application of chitosan composites. Professor Christopher Pastore, the principal researcher on the
subject, gave one of his research assistants approval to concentrate on studying extensive green roof systems. With support of the school's administration and under the guidance of Dr.Pastore, Zhenya Fomin, the principal of Green Homeworks Inc. has expanded the material library to include close to a dozen of extensive green roof systems available on the market today.
The practical part of the research includes installation and monitoring of existing extensive systems, development and testing of new prototypes, and experiments with sedum varieties and soil composition.
The purpose of this research initiative is to give future architects, designers and construction managers hands on training in green roof design and installation. As more data is collected and desired outcomes are shown it could be that teh campus will see a permanent full scale installation in the near future. Click here to learn more about green roofs.
